Getachew Brihanu is a traditionally trained artist who incorporates subject matter beyond the typical Christian iconography meant to serve the didactic or devotional purpose. Getachew chose to work in this direction to address various historic, social and political issues he is interested in. In his Makeda: The Queen of Saba, a narrative, presented at the Ethiopian show, Ethiopian Art: Tradition, Assimilation and Change, he tells the legendary story of the Queen of ancient Ethiopia’s journey to Jerusalem to visit King Solomon. In this painting he segmented the narrative into consecutive panels representing the different episodes of the Queen’s travels. In doing so, Getachew demands the viewer to consider each episode individually, and contemplate the overarching story.
